Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is on a two-day official visit to Latvia to investigate the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of a Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia. The visit forms part of the government’s commitment to ensuring justice, transparency, and accountability in cases involving the safety of Ghanaian citizens abroad.
During his stay, the Foreign Affairs Minister is expected to hold high-level meetings with Latvian government officials, law enforcement agencies, and relevant institutions directly involved in the case. These engagements are aimed at obtaining first-hand information, clarifying unanswered questions, and assessing the progress of investigations already conducted by Latvian authorities.
The tragic death of Nana Agyei Ahyia has raised serious concerns among Ghanaians at home and abroad, prompting calls for a thorough and independent inquiry. By personally leading this diplomatic mission, the Minister seeks to demonstrate Ghana’s resolve to protect its nationals and to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the student’s death are fully explained.
The visit will also strengthen diplomatic cooperation between Ghana and Latvia, particularly in matters of consular protection, justice, and the welfare of international students. Findings from the engagements are expected to guide further action by the Ghanaian government and provide clarity and closure to the bereaved family and the Ghanaian public.
